6 beliefs that may be holding women entrepreneurs back – Part 1

Are these beliefs holding you back?

Most of the women entrepreneurs I come across are super smart and service-driven.  We come to the marketplace with a product or service and our emotions and passion are deeply embedded in every aspect of what we do.

I have found that most of us (self included) do what we do because we really want to serve, support and empower others in the world.

This is a good thing.

I honestly believe that this service-driven mindset could potentially propel women entrepreneurs into the new generation of high-earners that you keep hearing me talk about. 

…but here’s the deal:  As women in business, we must learn how to be both service-driven and profit-focused.  When we do, we’ll begin to see our income sky-rocket and we’ll begin to embrace new levels of freedom and influence. 

Sounds yummy right?  Well if we really want to get to that place, there are a few disempowering beliefs we have to let go of that may be holding us back:

1.) I’m not in business for the money.  – The next time you hear someone say this at a networking event, don’t walk, RUN to the other side of the room.  This is the most embarrassing statement a women entrepreneur can EVER make.  That statement will make potential investors or business partners drop you like a hot potato because it suggests that this is more of a hobby for you and you probably don’t really know the nuts and bolts of business success. 

Listen, business is about profits and while I get the whole service-driven piece of it, I still believe you can be profit-focused at the same time.  You do not have to give up one for the other.  Here’s an interesting article I read recently on this topic.  You’ll find it revealing.

2.) I can’t afford it. – B.S. you can afford anything you want to.  I’ve seen women magically find money for handbags, travel excursions, designer dresses and any number of other things they really want.  If you decide not to invest in something that will actually help you (like coaching, mentoring or professional development tools), just be honest and say, “At this time, I am making a decision NOT to invest in the thing that will help me…”  Tell the dang truth!  “I can’t afford it” is an excuse, a curse and a lie!

3.) Let me think about it. – This statement by itself has to be one of the lamest I’ve ever heard.  Not that there’s anything wrong with thinking things over but the key is putting a deadline to it.  Highly successful women might say something like this:  “let me think about it and I will give you my decision by tomorrow at 12 noon.  How does that work for you?”  See the difference?  You’ve heard me say a million times, successful women are decisive and as my coach says, “waiting is NOT a success strategy.”
