6 questions to ask your potential coach.

If you are looking to partner with a coach, here’s a list of 6 questions you should ask BEFORE you hire them.  Because every coach is different, these questions will make sure the coach you hire is the right one to help you achieve the results you’re looking for.

 1.) Who is your coach? I always say, “every winner has a coach.”  That’s why this question is so important. The coach you hire should value coaching.  If she does, she’ll be consistently receiving high-level accountability from a private coach, mastermind group or coaching program.  She’ll also regularly attend trainings, conferences and workshops to gain new insights that can ultimately help you. This is the only way she can truly help you reach your next level.

2.) Are you certified? These days, a lot of people are calling themselves coaches even though they have NOT been trained as such.  Just because they give great advice does NOT qualify them as a coach. They might make a great mentor but not necessarily a great coach.  There are many important techniques certified coaches know how to use that untrained “coaches” don’t.  So make sure the coach you hire has actually received training in the area of coaching.  Otherwise she could hinder or delay your success without even knowing it.

3.) What is your specific area of expertise? NEVER go with a generic life or business coach who rambles on when you ask this question.  Your coach should have a specific area of expertise if she’s going to help you win.  Is she a health coach who can help you transform your body in 3 months?  Is she a career transformation coach who can give you a blueprint for designing a new career within a year?  The ideal coach will be able to give you a succinct answer that speaks directly to the solution you desire. 

4.) Do you have a system? This question is the perfect follow up to #3 because it gives your prospective coach a chance to explain the technique she will use to move you closer to your goal.  You don’t need to know every little detail about how she helps you get results but she should be able to explain the basics of how she will help or support you.  Her system should be simple, clear and designed in just a few steps or modules.  CAUTION: if she has a 25 step program, run for the hills.  The ideal coach should have a system that moves you forward quickly– in no more than 7-10 simple steps.  Less is more!

5.) Describe your coaching style.  Great coaching is rooted in asking the right questions.  That’s because we believe that the answers our clients are looking for are already within.  However, I believe that the best coaching also comes with some training as well.  Can your coach provide you with templates or scripts for making effective sales calls?  Can she show you step-by-step how to get your next opportunity?  From my experience the most effective coaching is driven by this formula: questions + mindset shifting + training + accountability = results, so ask this question to find out if your prospective coach’s style meets your specific needs.  

6.) How many clients do you currently have? There’s no right or wrong answer, but this question will reveal a lot about your prospective coach. If she currently has no clients, this might suggest that she’s just starting out or in transition.  If this is the case, can she really help you?  Do you want to be a part of her “building” process? If she has 3 to 5 clients, this might suggest that she is selective, successful, very exclusive and she might have high fees (this is a good sign, by the way).  It could also mean that she doesn’t want a huge client roster because she wants a lifestyle of freedom.  How does that resonate with you? If she has a coaching group or mastermind, it suggests that she knows how to leverage her time and she has influence.  This is a good thing.  Again, there is no wrong answer to this question.  Use your instinct to decide what kind of answer you are looking for and how you want to fit within your prospective coach’s current client dynamic.  Clients tend to model their coaches so it’s a good idea to find one that has achieved a level of success you wouldn’t mind aspiring to.  Check out this cool video if you want more info on how to work with an OverFlow Certified Coach.
