Watch her reaction when the OverFlow community presents a check to support her cause

In February of 2016, OverFlow Coaches Keana Jones, Priscilla Williams and I joined forces to host a 5-day Bible study and prayer series for women leaders and entrepreneurs.  We decided to call it the Secrets of Wealth (SOW) because we wanted to explore the biblical principles of sowing.  It was such a powerful study that we decided to turn it into a product.

Because we understand that real wealth comes through generosity, we thought it would be appropriate to sow all of the proceeds from our first round of sales into a worthy organization that is making a difference in the lives of others.  Needless to say, there are many organizations doing great work in Chicago but when I thought about women who are completely fearless and selfless in their work, Diane Latiker, the founder of Kids Off the Block came to mind immediately!

So thanks to the support of the Certified OverFlow Coaching team, the OverFlow community and all of the people who invested in the SOW Bible Study and Prayer Series, we were able to make this contribution to Kids Off the Block.  Watch Diane’s reaction when we give her the check and listen as she explains how she will use the money.

FOR A LIMITED TIME: If you would like to invest in SOW to support Kids Off the Block go to this link!

Why I have no competition.

Competition v. Collaboration

I’ve never been a fan of competition.  Maybe that’s why I shied away from team sports as a kid.  I never wanted to buy into the “us against them” mentality.  It just didn’t jibe with my personality.

Instead I enjoyed activities like running or swimming, where I was mainly competing against myself.

As much as I abhor it, competition has always been an undercurrent in every industry I’ve worked in.

The media and public relations industries were and still are infamous for being “dog-eat-dog” competitive.  Nevertheless, I managed to do pretty well in both.

Now I’m in the coaching industry where everyone claims to have the keys to your success.

In fact, there are many well-known coaches out there who’s work is very similar to mine.

Noticing the similarities one woman asked me,“Aren’t you concerned that she’ll take some of your clients?”

“Absolutely not,” I responded.

See, I have the audacity to believe that where I’m concerned, there is no competition.  Here’s why:

1.) I believe there is more than enough clients, money and opportunities to keep all of us busy and profitable. Competing with others suggests a belief that there is not enough which comes from a scarcity mindset.  I’m not down with that. I want us ALL to succeed!

2.)  I will not ever battle another human being for anything.  I will, however wage war in the spirit realm through prayer, surrender and decreeing things with the Word.  I’ve seen more results with this strategy than anything else.

3.) I believe that in this generation, collaboration is one of the most powerful success strategies we will ever use.  When women who are so-called “competitors” come together to support and lift each other up, a powerful heavenly force is unleashed.  As a result everyone benefits in ways the mind cannot even imagine.

4.) I have too much proof of God’s awesome favor working on my behalf in the past to not believe that it won’t do the same for me in the future.  Don’t even get me started on that, LOL!

Add these beliefs to the power of being focused (on your goal), having clarity (about the problems you can solve and for whom), having a strategy (for reaching those who need you) and having a high standard of excellence then it’s impossible to get distracted by the fear of “competition.”

I know this “no competition” idea is a radical one to embrace, especially in the business world. But operating in this supernatural space has gotten me a lot closer to my destiny than worrying about what others are doing.

Will success continue to elude you? Will you be in the same position you’re currently in next year? How will you change that?

Forgiveness as a success strategy.

If you’ve been around me for a while, you know that my focus is helping women create more money, freedom, influence and overflow. However it is impossible to sustain those areas without dealing with the role forgiveness plays in your quest for success.

Your most powerful success strategy could be forgiveness.

Did you know that forgiveness literally has the power to tear down strongholds in your life?  Certainly you’ve heard people in the spiritual realm talk about this but I believe this idea can also apply in business.

CASE STUDY: Not too long ago, I was working with a visionary leader who has broken through some incredible barriers in her life. To call her a survivor is an understatement.

Yet, with all that she’s achieved and overcome, she was still struggling with how to step into the level of success that she desired.  It was like she was hitting a wall every time she tried to move forward.

When I asked her who she needed to forgive, there was a brief pause. Then she rattled off the names of several people by whom she had been mistreated.  She admitted that she had not yet been able to forgive them for the pain they had caused.

Her admission was courageous.  It was also freeing. Immediately, the light bulb went off.  She realized that the feelings she was harboring against her offenders may have been stifling her momentum.  Without hesitation she agreed to start the “forgiveness work.”

How can God trust you with more if you will not forgive?

Now I’m no forgiveness expert, but I’ve had to work through my own issues in this area.  Plus, as a trained and certified coach, I know how to walk my clients through exercises that are simple yet so liberating that in many cases, a breakthrough happens instantly. I’ve learned that forgiveness is vitally important no matter what.

So who do you need to forgive? If you can’t think of anyone, do you need to forgive yourself?

Forgiveness, even for the most traumatic offenses, might be the weapon you need to help you break past the barrier that is separating you from the success and freedom you’ve been searching for.

DISCLAIMER: This is a weighty issue so consider seeking the help of a credentialed therapist to help you work through and move past deep wounds.

Serena would have failed without this.

Michael Jordan.

Oprah Winfrey.

Serena Williams.

All of them represent the best in their business and all of them have had a coach.

Yes, even the indomitable, record-breaking Serena Williams works with a coach to help her maintain her winning mindset.

You see, a coach is invaluable no matter whether you’re a newbie or a veteran in business.  Even once you’ve reached your personal best, a coach will help you move fearlessly and strategically to your next level.

If you’re just starting out and you’ve never had a coach, here’s what a skilled one can help you do:

- Shift your mindset: The mindset that got you where you are today is not the one that’s going to get you where you want to go.  Your coach will help you think in the direction of your goal.  In other words, the thoughts that subconsciously held you back will be uncovered and you’ll discover a new way of thinking that will support you at your next level.

- Create a blueprint for success: Once you make that shift and you decide where you want to go, your coach will help you chart the course and support you as you take action and gain momentum.

- Be your “no excuses” accountability partner: As you decide to step into your full potential, never underestimate the power of having an extra set of eyes and ears (and an extra brain).  Your coach is there to love you, push you, stretch you, believe in you and keep you to your word.  She is also there to help you work through all the doubt, fear and bullshit that comes up along the way.

Think about it.  When Serena Williams steps off the court, does she sit there alone trying to figure out her next move?  Absolutely not.  There is ALWAYS a coach on the sidelines, who can see the match from a unique perspective, who is waiting to support her and recommend strategies for winning the game.

A skilled coach also helps you move from your “safe zone” into your bold zone.  Your safe zone is comfy and familiar.  The majority of people spend their lives there and I totally understand why.  Who wants to face the uncertainty that comes with leaping when you don’t know if you’ll fail?

Those who venture into their bold zone however, unlock a level of potential they never knew they had.  It’s exhilarating to see what you can do when you stop being so afraid to fail.

When you’re ready to tap into your inner “Serena,” partner with a certified coach.  You’ll experience yourself on a whole new level.  Of course OverFlow Coaches are certified, trained and ready to help you create your next level breakthrough.  The question is, are you ready?

What to do when you’re not motivated by money

Money doesn't motivate me.

Some women are simply not motivated by money.

There. I said it. Truthfully, I’ve known this for a while now but I never thought I’d have a reason to let it come out of my mouth.

In fact, despite what you may think, I’m not even motivated by money. Sure I coach and train women on how to unlock the money code and I am a grateful that I get paid well for what I do but the paycheck isn’t what gets me geeked.

What gets me geeked is being of service.  I love to support other women toward breakthroughs big and small.  I enjoy showing them hidden profit opportunities that exist within their brilliance.  I get excited when I can show a woman how to build a business around her gifts and her lifestyle while simultaneously helping her gain all the visibility and freedom she can stand.  Now that is what gets me PUMPED!

I’ve done this quite well for several years now.  It’s what I was born to do.  I know it sounds cliché but if I could do it for free, I would.  In fact, for a while, I did the whole coaching and mentoring thing for nearly free.  It took me a while to build the confidence to say my rates without lowering my voice, asking for a “donation” instead of my fee or just avoiding the money conversation all together.

My avoidance issues were rooted in two things 1.) a jacked-up money mindset (which I have worked hard to fix) and 2.) I’m simply not motivated by money and I’m finally coming to grips with that!

Can you relate to this even a little?  If so, this might help.

If the pursuit of money doesn’t motivate you but service does then think of it this way:  You are actually helping the people you serve move forward in their money mindset when you boldly and confidently state your fees and expect to be paid well for what you do.

I recently hired a lawyer who is helping me protect my brands and intellectual property.  When she told me her base fee was more than a thousand dollars I nearly hit the floor.  For a moment, I reverted back to my old money mindset and said to myself “who does she think she is?”

However, since I know the value of what she is doing for me, I paid her because I am in a space where I want to work with the BEST!

More importantly, here’s what the pricey lawyer did for me: she moved me to a different level by unapologetically charging what she’s worth.  So by investing in my business through working with her, I am agreeing that I value my dream at a higher level.  Plus, she’s using her gifts and expertise to help solidify my dream…so I’m not going to ask her for a hook up, I’m going to honor her fee!

Make sense?

Take money out of the equation for a second and just see yourself helping someone take a step toward valuing themselves more.  Doesn’t it feel good to know you can do that?

When people value themselves by hiring you, then paying you well is simply how they honor the gifts you use to help them.

She is obviously not motivated by money.

Here’s another idea if you’re not the type who is motivated by money. Think of money as a vehicle to help you gain two important things: Options and freedom.  The more money you make, the more you can pick and choose where and how you live. Cash let’s you travel and live a location independent lifestyle if you so chose.

Money abundance allows you to support your favorite causes, ministries and loved ones.  When you have money, your kids don’t have to go into debt with student loans.  When cash is flowing without resistance, you can leave a legacy for your family, your parents don’t have to live in nursing homes, you have the best health care available when you need it and you can share generously without worrying about how your bills will get paid.

Nice right?

The other day I received payment for a speaking engagement I did recently.  It was a juicy lump sum but the amount didn’t move me.  In fact, the check stayed tucked away neatly in my purse for more than a week before I even deposited it.  However, when I thought about how that money will give me the freedom to tithe, save and then bless someone I love with a nice gift, well now I’m excited to get to the bank to put those dollars to work!

So if money doesn’t motivate you, it’s okay.  You’re not a weirdo and you’re not alone! Just let the idea of freedom and options motivate you.  Let your cause or movement motivate you.  Let the fact that you can be a blessing to someone motivate you!

Your comfort zone is the most dangerous place in your world.

What would happen for you if you surrounded yourself with brilliant, visionary, successful, supportive people regularly?

This question came up for me over the weekend as I read a facebook post from an old high school classmate of mine. She said something like this:

“Sometimes you just have to get out of your comfort zone…the quality of the people I’ve been with for the last 3 days has been inspiring…”

one of my all time faves

Now I don’t know where she went or who she was around but I do know that feeling.  The feeling of being in a room where you feel lifted and empowered…where there is no competition, only a desire to see everyone succeed.  It’s a pretty cool feeling.  Especially if you’re most often around what I call “comfort zone lovers.”

Then, as I was reading Secrets of 6-figure Women by Barbara Stanny, I ran across this paragraph:

“Too often I see under-earners hanging out with pessimists, worrywarts, folks who are generally fearful.  The only thing people in that group will likely support is the status quo.  Six-figure women, on the other hand, are drawn to risk takers, or at the very least, to those who applaud their efforts to go out on a limb.

That spoke to me big time because I see the mindset often.  I had to break through it myself.

With all that said, there’s no need for a bunch of commentary on my part.  This stuff speaks for itself. So I’ll just go back to my original question:

What would happen for you if you surrounded yourself with brilliant, visionary, successful, supportive, happy people regularly?  What could you do if you were around people who refused to doubt you?

I’m serious, I really wanna know!  Add your brief response below and let’s get a conversation going.

6 beliefs that may be holding black women entrepreneurs back – Part 2

Don't let these beliefs hold you back!

Last week in part one of this 2-part series, I shared 3 beliefs that may be holding black women entrepreneurs back.  Many people responded saying they had indeed struggled in those areas and urged me to release part two, so here goes.

As I said in the last post, it’s important for us as women entrepreneurs to be both service-driven and profit-focused. However it takes some work to overcome subconscious thoughts and ideas that could be secretly limiting the success we experience.  Can you relate to any of these?

4. I’ll just do it myself.  I’ll get it done faster. – Can I be honest? This is B.S.  It’s been well documented by many of the “gurus” that if you want to grow, you have to let go.  The most successful people in business are not doing it all themselves. If you’re the kind that refuses to get help to run your business get ready to stay in struggle for a very long time.

5. I don’t want to set my prices too high. – So let me see if I have this straight, you don’t want to set your prices too high because you assume you know exactly how much everyone has to spend on your service? Or, you don’t want your prices to reflect how good you really are at what you do? Or is it that you just want to be in the average price range that’s accessible to any and everyone?  I’m sorry but I don’t want to associate with anyone that is striving for “average.”  Higher prices suggest greater value and expertise.  That’s the kind of mindset I want to work with.

6. I have to hustle to succeed.  – This is the mother-load of disempowering beliefs.  Hustling is so over-rated.  The only reason people hustle is because they’ve convinced themselves that they’ll lose something if they are caught taking time off.  Hustlers have an insecurity problem.  Hustlers have not fully bought in to the value they bring to the marketplace.  They are severely threatened by competition and truthfully, they need therapy.   Hustling is over-rated and you DO NOT have to hustle to succeed.  Freedom is the new definition of success.  If you’re not taking several weeks off in your business every year, it’s time to re-evaluate your systems, teams, clients and the results that you create.

Your thoughts? Which one of these beliefs are YOU ready to let go of?  Share below.  In my next post, I’ll reveal what you can do to replace these beliefs so you can soar in your business.

6 beliefs that may be holding women entrepreneurs back – Part 1

Are these beliefs holding you back?

Most of the women entrepreneurs I come across are super smart and service-driven.  We come to the marketplace with a product or service and our emotions and passion are deeply embedded in every aspect of what we do.

I have found that most of us (self included) do what we do because we really want to serve, support and empower others in the world.

This is a good thing.

I honestly believe that this service-driven mindset could potentially propel women entrepreneurs into the new generation of high-earners that you keep hearing me talk about.

…but here’s the deal:  As women in business, we must learn how to be both service-driven and profit-focused.  When we do, we’ll begin to see our income sky-rocket and we’ll begin to embrace new levels of freedom and influence.

Sounds yummy right?  Well if we really want to get to that place, there are a few disempowering beliefs we have to let go of that may be holding us back:

1.) I’m not in business for the money.  – The next time you hear someone say this at a networking event, don’t walk, RUN to the other side of the room.  This is the most embarrassing statement a women entrepreneur can EVER make.  That statement will make potential investors or business partners drop you like a hot potato because it suggests that this is more of a hobby for you and you probably don’t really know the nuts and bolts of business success.

Listen, business is about profits and while I get the whole service-driven piece of it, I still believe you can be profit-focused at the same time.  You do not have to give up one for the other.  Here’s an interesting article I read recently on this topic.  You’ll find it revealing.

2.) I can’t afford it. – B.S. you can afford anything you want to.  I’ve seen women magically find money for handbags, travel excursions, designer dresses and any number of other things they really want.  If you decide not to invest in something that will actually help you (like coaching, mentoring or professional development tools), just be honest and say, “At this time, I am making a decision NOT to invest in the thing that will help me…”  Tell the dang truth!  “I can’t afford it” is an excuse, a curse and a lie!

3.) Let me think about it. – This statement by itself has to be one of the lamest I’ve ever heard.  Not that there’s anything wrong with thinking things over but the key is putting a deadline to it.  Highly successful women might say something like this:  “let me think about it and I will give you my decision by tomorrow at 12 noon.  How does that work for you?”  See the difference?  You’ve heard me say a million times, successful women are decisive and as my coach says, “waiting is NOT a success strategy.”

Do any of these sound familiar?  Share your gut reactions below and get ready for part two.  In part two of this article, I share 3 more mindsets that may be holding women entrepreneurs back. Click here to read.
