What to do when you’re not motivated by money

Money doesn't motivate me.

Some women are simply not motivated by money.

There. I said it. Truthfully, I’ve known this for a while now but I never thought I’d have a reason to let it come out of my mouth.

In fact, despite what you may think, I’m not even motivated by money. Sure I coach and train women on how to unlock the money code and I am a grateful that I get paid well for what I do but the paycheck isn’t what gets me geeked.

What gets me geeked is being of service.  I love to support other women toward breakthroughs big and small.  I enjoy showing them hidden profit opportunities that exist within their brilliance.  I get excited when I can show a woman how to build a business around her gifts and her lifestyle while simultaneously helping her gain all the visibility and freedom she can stand.  Now that is what gets me PUMPED!

I’ve done this quite well for several years now.  It’s what I was born to do.  I know it sounds cliché but if I could do it for free, I would.  In fact, for a while, I did the whole coaching and mentoring thing for nearly free.  It took me a while to build the confidence to say my rates without lowering my voice, asking for a “donation” instead of my fee or just avoiding the money conversation all together.

My avoidance issues were rooted in two things 1.) a jacked-up money mindset (which I have worked hard to fix) and 2.) I’m simply not motivated by money and I’m finally coming to grips with that!

Can you relate to this even a little?  If so, this might help.

If the pursuit of money doesn’t motivate you but service does then think of it this way:  You are actually helping the people you serve move forward in their money mindset when you boldly and confidently state your fees and expect to be paid well for what you do.

I recently hired a lawyer who is helping me protect my brands and intellectual property.  When she told me her base fee was more than a thousand dollars I nearly hit the floor.  For a moment, I reverted back to my old money mindset and said to myself “who does she think she is?”

However, since I know the value of what she is doing for me, I paid her because I am in a space where I want to work with the BEST!

More importantly, here’s what the pricey lawyer did for me: she moved me to a different level by unapologetically charging what she’s worth.  So by investing in my business through working with her, I am agreeing that I value my dream at a higher level.  Plus, she’s using her gifts and expertise to help solidify my dream…so I’m not going to ask her for a hook up, I’m going to honor her fee!

Make sense?

Take money out of the equation for a second and just see yourself helping someone take a step toward valuing themselves more.  Doesn’t it feel good to know you can do that?

When people value themselves by hiring you, then paying you well is simply how they honor the gifts you use to help them.

She is obviously not motivated by money.

Here’s another idea if you’re not the type who is motivated by money. Think of money as a vehicle to help you gain two important things: Options and freedom.  The more money you make, the more you can pick and choose where and how you live. Cash let’s you travel and live a location independent lifestyle if you so chose.

Money abundance allows you to support your favorite causes, ministries and loved ones.  When you have money, your kids don’t have to go into debt with student loans.  When cash is flowing without resistance, you can leave a legacy for your family, your parents don’t have to live in nursing homes, you have the best health care available when you need it and you can share generously without worrying about how your bills will get paid.

Nice right?

The other day I received payment for a speaking engagement I did recently.  It was a juicy lump sum but the amount didn’t move me.  In fact, the check stayed tucked away neatly in my purse for more than a week before I even deposited it.  However, when I thought about how that money will give me the freedom to tithe, save and then bless someone I love with a nice gift, well now I’m excited to get to the bank to put those dollars to work!

So if money doesn’t motivate you, it’s okay.  You’re not a weirdo and you’re not alone! Just let the idea of freedom and options motivate you.  Let your cause or movement motivate you.  Let the fact that you can be a blessing to someone motivate you!
